Participatory budgeting gives people real power over real money. By empowering people to collectively decide how to spend public money, participatory budgeting deepens democracy, builds stronger communities, and makes public budgets more equitable and effective.
In the spring of 2022, the County will launch an innovative participatory budgeting process to identify and select priority projects to advance racial equity. Approximately $2.5 million from the American Rescue Plan Act will be used to fund the selected projects. These projects will focus on achieving equitable community outcomes in the areas of economic opportunity, housing, and mental health.
How Can You Participate?
The first phase of the Participatory Budgeting (PB) process is to form a Participatory Budgeting Committee. The roles of this Committee are to:
- Assist with inclusive community outreach, particularly within marginalized communities;
- Review and evaluate PB grant proposals based on the criteria of need, impact and feasibility;
- Co-design and participate in outreach events.
The Participatory Budgeting Committee will meet up to 8 times during this process. Attendance at all 8 meetings is required to participate in the Participatory Budgeting Committee. Most of the meetings will be conducted virtually. Please be sure to review the application so you fully understand the role and required time commitment.
A stipend of $50 per meeting is available to participants for their efforts and contributions to the process. Participants must attend and fully participate in Participatory Budgeting Committee meetings to receive compensation.
The application period is open from April 12 – July 12, 2022. You can submit your application online or you can submit a print copy (available at the 3501 Civic Center Drive, Suite 325, San Rafael, CA 94903).
